services

Alvin Animal Clinic offers a variety of services which aid you in assuring a healthy life for your pet. Some of the services we offer are listed below. Please contact us if you need more information or are looking for a service not listed.

Feluk and FIV info. Feline leukemia and Feline Immuno-deficiency Virus are both common and very contagious diseases that can affect your feline friends.  FIV has to be contracted by either a bite wound or other bodily fluid from an already infected cat.  Feline leukemia can actually be transferred simply from nose to nose contact with an infected cat.  These diseases are both incurable and shorten the life span of your pet.  We do offer a test at our clinic that can tell us if your cat has contracted either of the diseases.  We also offer vaccines for both FIV and Feline leukemia to help keep your pet in the best of health.

Heartworm preventionHeartworm disease is a very prevalent, devastating disease of our area.  It is caused by the bite of an infected mosquito.  Heartworms flow through the blood stream of dogs into the heart and reproduce there causing blockages to the blood flow of the major arteries.  Untreated, this can cause death.  Fortunately heartworm disease is almost 100% treatable.  With a simple monthly oral medication you can keep your dogs safe from heartworm disease as well as a few other intestinal parasites.

Glaucoma Dogs and cats can suffer from glaucoma, or increased intraocular pressure,  just as humans can.  Left untreated, glaucoma can cause blindness, pain, and the loss of the affected eye.  We do offer a test at our clinic to check eye pressure.

EKG-This is a machine which monitors the electrical activity of the heart.  We use it during all of our surgeries.

Bloodwork, in-clinic- We have a complete laboratory to allow quick and reliable analysis of bloodworm prior to surgery or critical cases.

Pain Management – Every surgery at Alvin Animal Clinic includes injectable medications to control pain for the first 24 hours after surgery.  We also offer additional medications for you to give at home to control pain. Remember, human pain medicines are not safe for pets

OFA hip radiographs – These are to test for hip and elbow dysplasia.  They are taken under general anesthesia using a protocol approved by the Orthopedic Foundation of America (OFA).  The radiographs are then submitted to OFA for analysis.  Hip and elbow dysplasia are inherited malformations of the joints that are most common in large dogs, but can occur in any dog.  OFA recommends that all large breed dogs over 2 years of age be checked for dysplasia.  Please do not breed your dog if he or she has not been checked for dysplasia.  We do not want to pass this crippling disease on to future generations.

Preventative medications – We believe in keeping your pet as healthy as possible and preventing diseases from reaching your pet before we have to treat them if at all possible.  As a part of preventative care, we promote yearly vaccinations, monthly heartworm prevention, monthly flea prevention, and blood screening for senior pets among other things.  Catching a disease before it takes over the body generally helps in fighting it.

Rattlesnake vaccine – We offer this special vaccine particularly for hunting dogs or any dog that spends a lot of time in rattlesnake prone areas.  The vaccine is given every six months.  This vaccine buys you time to get to a veterinarian for treatment in the case of a bite.

Artificial insemination – We offer this procedure for dogs only.  Our doctors can perform AI with fresh or fresh cooled semen.  Semen analysis is performed with each mating to ensure adequate sperm count.

Wellness packages – Alvin Animal Clinic offers senior wellness packages for pets over the age of seven years.  By checking internal organ function and analyzing blood for signs of disease while your pet still appears healthy, we can improve both your pet’s quality and length of life.  Often by waiting until you see signs of disease in your pet, the disease process has already taken a great toll on the internal organs.

Diabetes- Diabetes mellitus, also known as “sugar” diabetes is very similar in animals to how it affects people.  It is characterized by elevated levels of blood glucose (sugar) caused by inadequate insulin (or lack of insulin use).  Elevated glucose leads to cataracts in dogs, frequent infections, and damage to body organs.  Control of diabetes in pets is through the use of special diets and insulin injections.  Signs of diabetes are: increased urine, increased thirst, weight loss, tiredness, and frequent infections.  A simple blood test, performed at Alvin Animal Clinc, is used to test for diabetes.

Ferret vaccinesYour pet ferret does need vaccines just like the felines and canines.  We do offer vaccinations at our clinic specifically for you pet ferret.  One of our doctors also has a special interest in exotic pets.  We gladly welcome your ferret pets here as our patients and would like to educate you on the proper care of these little creatures.

Exotic petsExotic pets are quickly becoming more popular with time.  Many people however, adopt these pets without all the knowledge they need to care for them.  We are fortunate to have a veterinarian on staff whose special interest is in exotic medicine.  This means she has had a little extra training in that particular field.  All of our Alvin Animal Clinic doctors however will be happy to see your ferrets, birds, lizards, snakes, turtles, guinea pigs, hamsters, or gerbils.  Please let us educate you on how to be the best pet owner of these unique creatures.  No poisonous or venomous pets please.  If you have poisonous or venomous pets please call first, and we will locate a doctor for your special pet.
